Pedro Castillo today assumes Presidency of Peru on its bicentennial anniversary

Schoolteacher Jose Pedro Castillo Terrones today will take the oath of office as Constitutional President of the Republic for the 2021-2026 term in the year marking the Bicentennial of Peru's Independence.


The transfer of supreme power of the President-elect of the Republic will be held in a solemn session at the Legislative Palace's Hemicycle.

Legislators have been called to participate in the session at 9 a.m. and, according to the official schedule, the Congress' Invitation Commission will arrive at 11:15 a.m. (local time) at Torre Tagle Palace, where they will await Pedro Castillo.

At the same time, President Francisco Sagasti will leave the Government Palace towards the headquarters of Parliament to hand over the presidential sash.

The transfer of power act is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.

Castillo's inauguration ceremony will be attended by dignitaries from various countries, including Presidents Guillermo Lasso (Ecuador), Sebastian Piñera (Chile), and Ivan Duque (Colombia), who arrived on Tuesday in Lima.

Spanish King Felipe VI, as well as Vice-Presidents Hugo Velazquez (Paraguay) and Hamilton Mourão (Brazil), will be present in the ceremony as well.

Castillo will take the reins of the country after the National Election Board (JNE) proclaimed him as winner of the presidential runoff election held on June 6.
