The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) has approved the release of INIA 440 K'anchareq —a new bread wheat variety of high genetic quality developed by the
National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA).
INIA 440 K'anchareq is a new variety of bread wheat with high genetic value, which can increase the income of small and medium scale farmers in Cusco and Apurimac regions.
INIA 440 K'anchareq will see a production of 5.7 tons per hectare, thus outperforming other varieties by 30%.
In addition, it is resistant to yellow rust (the major disease threat to these crops) and adapts to different types of climate in the Andean region with spring-like weather.
Moreover, due to its good genetic makeup, it offers grains with 79.2 kg/hectoliter weight and adequate amounts of gluten, a protein that makes the dough elastic, consistent, and fluffy in the baking industry.
Minister Tenorio affirmed that these attributes make INIA 440 K'anchareq wheat a good alternative to boost family agriculture for around 80,000 farming families who are dedicated to this crop in the Andean regions of Cusco, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Junin, among others.
