Peruvian Association of Incoming and Domestic Tourism Operators (Apotur) Vice-President Claudia Medina stated that the inauguration of the new Jorge Chavez International Airport —the gateway to the Peruvian capital, Lima— marks a turning point in Peru's connectivity and represents a historic opportunity to position the country as a first-class tourist destination.

"At Apotur, we welcome this project as a firm step toward modernizing our infrastructure and (offering) a more efficient, safe, and welcoming experience for those who visit us," she said.

Medina stated that the new terminal not only expands the operational capacity of the national air system but also places Peru in a strategic position to become a regional hub for tourism and business, capable of competing with South America's main airports.

"For this progress to have a real and sustainable impact, it is essential to accompany it with a national tourism development strategy, one that integrates international promotion campaigns, reinforces security at destinations, improves regional infrastructure, and, above all, promotes effective decentralization that allows more Peruvians to benefit from tourism," Medina proposed.

Along the same lines, the executive stated that internal connectivity must be strengthened, and "that is a priority."

"Encouraging interregional flights and accelerating the development of airports in the country's interior will ensure that this major gateway does not remain isolated," Medina commented.

The vice-president added that a modern gateway is not effective if it is not integrated into an efficient logistics system, noting that it is crucial to continue fine-tuning aspects of the airport itself, such as signage, pedestrian access, and permanent vehicle access.

"The incorporation of boarding bridges for large aircraft such as the Airbus A380 allows us to dream big, attract long-haul tourists, and draw visitors who stay longer in the country," she said.

Opportunity

The vice-president stated that the launch of the new air terminal adds a major opportunity: to promote the stopovers in Lima, as well as make it easier for transit passengers to discover our capital, experience its culture, enjoy its cuisine, and connect with our identity.

"It is a smart and strategic way to turn each layover into an open door toward new experiences. The new Jorge Chavez is much more than a modern infrastructure: it is the prelude to everything Peru can offer the world," Medina explained.

The executive added that the real challenge begins now: to build, behind this gateway, a connected, welcoming, competitive, and memorable country.

"Let every arrival be the beginning of a great story, and every visitor an ambassador of the best of Peru," she emphasized.
