Ambassador and former Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio on Friday presented to
his credential letters as Permanent Representative of Peru to that international organization.
During the meeting, Popolizio renewed Peru's commitment to the purposes and principles of the
United Nations, and the desire to continue working with that organization on the main issues included in the international agenda.
While addressing the regional situation, Ambassador Popolizio placed special emphasis on the impact of Venezuelan migration on host countries, such as Peru, which exceeds the response capacity of these States.
In this regard, he stressed the importance of the firm and continuous support of the international community —especially the
United Nations— in raising the resources necessary to address the migration phenomenon in our region.
For his part, the
Secretary-General highlighted Peru's important contribution to the UN's efforts and acknowledged the South American country's role in the
United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member during the last two years, which ends this month.
It must be noted Peru is a founding member of the
UN and one of the few countries whose nationals have held the highest positions in the international organization.
Victor Andres Belaunde was Chair of the General Assembly in 1959 and Ambassador Javier Perez de Cuellar served as
Secretary-General from 1982 to 1991.
Besides, the country has held the Security Council Presidency on several occasions such as:
April 2018 and
July 2019.
