The global impact of the start of Pope Leo XIV's Pontificate —evident in the massive presence of faithful and international delegations at the enthronement Mass— is a clear sign of recognition of his pastoral role, Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon Chairman and Archbishop Emeritus of Huancayo, Cardinal Pedro Barreto, stated.

"More than 150 nations were present at the Mass marking the beginning of the Pontificate. There have always been many, but this figure reveals that the vast majority of States recognize this leader of the Catholic Church," Barreto affirmed.

The cardinal noted that this global response marks the continuity of the spiritual leadership left by Pope Francis and reflects the renewed hope that Leo XIV has inspired in the Catholic faithful.

"There has been an overwhelming sign of joy not only in Peru or Latin America, but across many continents. This is something very important and evident," he stated.

Likewise, the cardinal highlighted that the new pontiff —the first from the Augustinian order and with deep missionary experience in Peru— has called for safeguarding the faith in service to humanity and building a united Church, open to dialogue and centered on love put into action.

"Pope Leo XIV reminds us that this is the hour of love —not an emotional love, but a love that becomes action, service to the poorest, as Jesus taught," Barreto pointed out.

He believes that the Pontificate of Leo XIV, an Augustinian of U.S. origin but with a Latin American heart, represents continuity within renewal.

Barreto also said that it marks a new chapter for the universal Church, led by a shepherd who understands the pain, hope, and diversity of the peoples.
