Parque de las Leyendas or 'Park of Legends' Zoo in Lima is home to 130 species of monkeys native to inner Peru, neighboring nations and Africa.
According to the Chinese zodiac, 2016 is the year of Monkey starting from February 8, so the zoo is trying to get people to know these species by learning about their customs.
Many of them were incorporated into the park as a result of seizure after being found, illegally trafficked, abandoned, or donated, but others were born at these facilities.
Species include, among others, the howler, owl, night, white-bellied spider, bald-headed uakari, pygmy marmoset, titi and squirrel monkeys.
The animals are fed with mashed food, fruits and vegetables and bred in captivity in a sort of an island located in the Rainforest Sector of the park.
The hamadryas baboon and grivet are African species and the rest of the primates come from Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela.
The length of pregnancy in primates varies depending on the species, ranging from six to nine months.
Monkeys are group-living animals, many of them carry their babies in their belly and then on their back. They are very curious animals and usually spend their time looking for fruits and leaves.
The zoo is open Monday to Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM (local time).
