Peru's capital city Lima will celebrate the 480th anniversary of its Spanish foundation with a variety of cultural, artistic, religious and other commemorative activities over the weekend.
The organization will be in charge of the new municipal administration under the leadership of Luis Castañeda Lossio, who was recently sworn in as the new mayor of the once called “City of the Kings.”
The celebrations start today with an exhibit named “Dialogos Entre Tiempos” (Dialogues between Times), which will display pieces painted by Peruvian masters at the Pancho Fierro Municipal Gallery.
On Friday morning, municipal authorities will place flowers at the foot of the admiral Abel Bergasse Du Petit Thouars monument, located on the fourth block of Avenida Petit Thouars. This commemorates the defense of Lima in the face of Chilean invaders in January 1881.
At night, the Municipal Theater will host the “Gran Gala Criolla de Lima,” a performance of Peruvian Creole music gathering renowned artists such as Esther Davila "Bartola" and Lucy Aviles, as well as important musicians and artists.
On Saturday, Jan. 17, a colorful parade will grace the streets of the historical center passing though Plaza San Martin, the pedestrian street Jiron de la Union and Lima’s main square.
Sunday, Jan. 18 is the official anniversary of the city’s founding. At 6:00 am, there will be a 21 gun salute fired by the Peruvian Guard Legion in the Plaza de Armas, or main square.
Following the salute, the raising of Peru, Lima and Tahuantinsuyo flags will be executed by Mayor Castañeda, Deputy Mayor Patricia Juarez and Town Councilor Carlos Canales.
A commemoration in honor of Taulichusco, the indigenous leader of the Lima area when Pizarro arrived, will be held on Pasaje Nicolas Ribera Street.
At 10:00 am, Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani will celebrate a mass and Te Deum at the Lima’s Cathedral.
On Sunday night, the Municipality of Lima will re-open the Magic Water Circuit to the public to end the celebrations.
