The regional government of Lima announced the immediate allocation of additional resources to protect and promote the Sacred City of Caral-Supe, as it is expected to become a new major tourist destination after being declared a World Cultural Heritage site by Unesco.

The Governor of Lima, Nelson Chui, said this is part of research and international cooperation projects in the area.

The money will be used to implement irrigation and reforestation projects as well as promote organic farming and environment conservation.

Local authorities have also planned to improve the Caral-Supe road, build a pedestrian bridge, enhance tourist facilities and reinforce the riverbanks in the Caral archaeological zone.

"We must continue to strongly support Caral and other archaeological sites in the region," he said.

Other ancient sites to benefit from additional funding include Aspero (the oldest port in Caral-Supe city), Vichama and Bandurria in the province of Huaura, Shicras in Huaral and Incahuasi in Canete, among other attractions.

Chui added that the regional government will conduct training programs for local hotel and restaurants owners, tourism officials and the National Police with the aim of providing better services to visitors to Caral.

Peru's Sacred City of Caral-Supe, the oldest centre of civilization in the Americas, was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List by the World Heritage Committee, chaired by María Jesús San Segundo, the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Spain to UNESCO.
