Lima 2019: Rugby fields delivered, ready for national team's preparation

11:01 | Lima, Mar. 28.

Lima 2019 fulfilled Peruvian Rugby Federation's desire to deliver a rugby 7 stadium and warm-up track to the national team.

Lima 2019 Infrastructure and Project Manager Wilhelm Funcke attended the ceremony, joined by Peruvian Rugby Federation Head Nestor Corbetto, World Rugby's International Technical Delegate Santiago Ramallo, and members of national teams.

"It is imperative for Lima 2019 to have a venue of this nature because by doing so lesser known sports, that rescue the values of our society, will receive attention," said Funcke, a representative of the organizing committee.

For his part, Corbetto said: "It is a very emotional moment for Peruvian rugby. 22 years ago, when the federation was created, we could not imagine we were going to have our own stadium, like the one recently delivered by Lima 2019."

About the sport

Rugby 7 was created in Scotland in 1883, when a fundraising sports tournament failed to gather all the required players and the match was cut to 15 minutes. It became so popular that it has been a part of the Pan American Games since Toronto 2015.
