Lima 2019: Peru's para-badminton player dreams of winning gold

14:50 | Lima, Mar. 26.

Lima 2019 Sports Ambassador and current Pan American Para-Badminton champion, Pilar Jauregui, dreams of winning gold in the upcoming Parapan American Games Lima 2019.

The 30 year-old athlete says she gets herself around the city by 'rowing.'

"I move around the city faster in my wheelchair than in a taxi," says Pilar, an example of courage.

The Sports Complex 2 at the VIDENA —her safe space and place for daily training— also harbors her dreams of hanging the gold medal around her neck at the Games.

About Jauregui

Pilar is a major player in para-badminton, a sport that fills her with passion.

A bilateral hip dislocation that afflicted her when she was 13 years old led her health to deteriorate, and since she was 20 years old, she could practically no longer walk.

This sport helped her find motivation, in her case, to compete, to feel fulfilled and also to dabble in wheelchair basketball and tennis.

Now, thanks to her tenacity, she occupies the first place in the American ranking of para-badminton.

In 2017, she won the gold medal at the Brazilian Open and was honored at the Ulsan World Cup in Korea; for her victory, she was even named an Ambassador of Lima 2019

"I think we'll usher in the tournament well. We're hosts, and we have to grab medals. The Lima 2019 Games will be a beautiful festival for everyone, and I want to bring myself and all Peruvians some joy," says Pilar, while 'rowing' through the city in her wheelchair.
