Lima 2019: Parapan Am Games to become window of opportunity

15:56 | Lima, Apr. 2.

The Lima 2019 Parapan American Games will be the window of opportunity a person with impairment needs, Peru's National Paralympic Association President Luisa Villar has affirmed.

These comments were made during the awareness workshop "I'm POSSIBLE," which gathered more than 70 teachers from educational and sports institutions in order to raise awareness among students through informative talks and recreational activities, especially in reference to the Paralympic Movement.

Given the proximity of the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games, Para badminton coach Derly Delgado assured that "the Games will be a very important event because it will change the perception society has of people with impairments."

Meanwhile, Sorei Nuñez —a teacher at Lima's Pamer School— stated that "learning about Para Sports will motivate the children to go cheer Para athletes on. The Games will leave a legacy, not only because of the infrastructure, but because of the sport itself."

Para athlete Jose Gonzalez-Mugaburu —who participated in six Para Olympics and ten Parapan American Games in the swimming discipline— hopes that Lima 2019 can educate children but, above all, that it helps people to commit to solidarity, "so that we are all equal."

This workshop is an educational project for young people ages 6 and 18 to learn about the Paralympic Movement and Paralympic values. For this purpose, teachers are taught various tools that they are meant to share the feelings of a person —with an impairment— with their students through playful activities.

"This workshop raises awareness and manages to share many aspects that can be taught to children. It is a very important learning moment because everything starts at school," Nuñez said.

On August 23, Lima will witness the start of the Parapan American Games that will gather 1890 athletes from 33 countries that will participate in 17 sports and 18 disciplines. The event will come to an end on September 1.
