The National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) promotes international protection of Peruvian inventions at the 17th session of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) Working Group, which opened on February 19 and runs until today (February 21) in Geneva, Switzerland.

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General Daren Tang extended this invitation to representatives of the PCT Working Group's Member States.

Inventions and New Technologies Director Manuel Castro participates on behalf of the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi).

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) is an international treaty administered by the WIPO, with more than 157 Member States, including Peru, which provides an international system for filing patent applications, through a unified application process, thereby allowing inventors to protect their inventions abroad.

During its participation in this international event, Indecopi will provide an understanding of the PCT situation in Peru and address the upgrade of the e-PCT system for the online filing of international patent applications and new functions, which is used by Peruvians to file and process international PCT applications.

It will also help strengthen Indecopi's institutional position and leadership in the region in terms of protection and promotion of patents, thus contributing to the efforts made by the institution regarding protection of inventions abroad.

Likewise, Indecopi's presence in this session will help initiatives in favor of the strengthening of capacities for patent examiners and the opportunity of exchanging good practices with patent offices in PCT Member States.

In Peru, the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) entered into force on June 6, 2009, enabling the filing of more than 300 PCT international applications, and allowing investors, companies, universities, and national research centers to protect their inventions in PCT Member States, by filing an international application before Indecopi's Directorate of Inventions and New Technologies.
