Within the framework of the
APEC Economic Leaders' Week (AELW) held in Bangkok, Thailand, the head of Google's Asia Pacific Trade Policy, Eunice Huang, on Tuesday confirmed that the Internet search company will support the Peruvian APEC Presidency in 2024.
To do so, Google will implement special segments to bring APEC closer to citizens, under the scheme proposed by Peru called APEC Ciudadano (APEC Citizen).
The announcement was made during the working meeting she held with Peruvian representative to APEC SOM Renato Reyes.
The Google representative pointed out that, in 2024, the multinational corporation could finance the implementation, in Peru, of:
i) An "App Challenge," a contest open to university students under 30 years of age from the 21 APEC economies to develop an app related to one of the priority issues identified by the Peruvian APEC Presidency.
iii) The exploration of additional complementary activities, such as the provision of experts in the field of clean energy to give talks to students, as well as the financial support for the participation of successful entrepreneurs in the technology area so as to show how innovation can promote the transition to the formal and global economy.
The "APEC Citizen" initiative that Peru aims to promote during its APEC 2024 Presidency will consist of holding technological and cultural events, musical concerts, presentations at schools/universities or academic seminars, etc., in a complementary fashion with APEC 2024 official meetings.
The goal is to promote a better understanding, by the citizens, of the importance of APEC, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life in member economies.
Another collaboration from Google, which will materialize these days in Bangkok, consists of coordinating a conversation between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and a renowned Thai YouTuber to disseminate —on social media and with a special focus on young people— the plans of Peru's APEC 2024 Presidency and the benefits the country has gained since it joined APEC in 1998.
