FIFA: Cubillas is Peru's Pele

Cubillas, Sotil y Cueto.

"The Peruvian legend" is how FIFA describes former striker Teofilo Cubillas on a special review, which addresses El Nene's (The Kid) career.

Peru's national team will return to a World Cup tournament after 36 years. Its last appearance —at such events— took place in Spain (1982), with Cubillas belonging to the Inca squad.

In this sense, FIFA points out he was regarded as "Pele's successor" by the Brazilian star himself, following his outstanding performance in Mexico (1970), where he won the Best Young Player’s award.

In a video —part of FIFA's archives— the senior athlete reflects on "playing at three of Peru's four World Cups to date," where he scored 10 goals in 13 matches.

He also affirms Pele will always be his top soccer idol.
