Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi affirmed that Peru is committed to the defense, promotion, and strengthening of democracy, human rights, safety, and development.
In her speech, the minister said Peru is convinced that greater joint efforts are necessary to strengthen the mechanisms for implementing the
Inter-American Democratic Charter.
Likewise, she highlighted the importance of this tool in defense of the legitimate exercise of power by democratic governments.
"The Charter explicitly includes this in several of its central points. It is therefore evident that the questioning about the legitimate exercise of power by a government, established in accordance with the democratic constitutional rules of a country in the Americas —as is the case of the current government of Peru— fail to comply with the spirit of the legal obligations embodied in the Inter-American Democratic Charter," Gervasi expressed.
Furthermore, the high-ranking official encouraged the hemispheric community to renew its adherence to the principle of non-intervention, in particular with regard to the defense of democracy, which complies with the law and is included in the OAS' founding treaty.
In addition, the Cabinet member explained that, like other countries in the world, Peru faces challenges in terms of human rights, some of which date back to the events that followed
the coup d'état perpetrated by former President Pedro Castillo in December 2022 —a breaking of the constitutional order that was publicly condemned by the
OAS General Secretariat and the
Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
In this regard, Gervasi stated that, as befits the rule of law in a democracy, the competent entities are carrying out impartial investigations into the events that occurred at that time.
