Peruvian Environment Minister Gabriel Quijandria on Monday affirmed that —in order to generate environmental sustainability— indigenous peoples must be included in this process as providers of solutions.

"Let's combine technology, but also applying the ancestral knowledge of the Amazonian communities," he underlined.

Within this framework, the high-ranking official stressed the importance of research and its contribution to a better understanding of the Amazonia in development models as a country, thus highlighting the objective of this sector on the protection of ecosystems and the appraisal of natural resources.

Likewise, he deemed as priority establishing new and better forms for the human bond with nature.

"Let's remember that COVID-19 is a zoonosis, a pandemic generated by an inappropriate connection with our ecosystem. We must solve environmental problems that we ourselves have generated," he said.

International Congress on Peruvian Amazonia

This event —organized by the Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazonia (IIAP), which is attached to the Ministry of Environment— constitutes a space for open dialogue among national and foreign researchers from different areas, development managers, public sector institutions, and non-governmental organizations in order to encourage dissemination, as well as exchange of knowledge and experiences.

It will take place virtually from November 23 to 27, 2020, and is freely accessible.

Topics related to water and its resources in the Amazonia will be addressed; as will hydrobiology, aquaculture and fisheries; ecology and sustainable use of Amazonian forests; biodiversity and sustainable use; anthropic impacts in the Peruvian Amazonia; traditional knowledge, conservation, and good living in the Peruvian Amazonia; public policies for Amazonian development; and territorial management for the development of the Peruvian Amazonia.
