Defense Min: All levels of Gov't meet emergency needs after landslide in Tacna

09:00 | Tacna (Tacna region), Feb. 23.

Defense Minister Walter Martos affirmed that all levels of government are dealing with the emergency situation that arose in Peru's southern city of Tacna after the occurrence of a landslide and heavy rains on Friday night.

It is a level 4 emergency and the Government seeks a report from local authorities to determine if a state of emergency will be declared in the region or not.

"All levels of government back the emergency response actions, in coordination with regional and local governments. A commission composed of the Minister of Agriculture, Indeci, and Cenepred has reached the area to assess people's needs," he stated.

Emergency response actions focus on areas affected by the landslide, which struck two populated centers sweeping away Tacna's market and bus terminal.

"The Armed Forces are working hand-in-hand with the National Police and firefighters. Besides, the Minister of Agriculture leads the support to the Tacna population," the minister said.

Finally, Martos remarked that the Government expresses solidarity with the four victims' families, to whom it offered its deepest condolences.
