Peru's Judicial Branch, the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations, the European Union, the German Embassy, the Spanish Embassy, and the Peruvian Agency for International Cooperation (APCI) on Thursday signed a declaration of commitment to promote the eradication of violence against women.

During the event, Peruvian authorities reviewed the situation of this problem in the country.

"Despite the efforts made by civil society and the State, violence against women continues to be a serious social problem," Judiciary Chairwoman Elvia Barrios stated.

"The Judicial Branch is aware not only of this reality, but also of our responsibility towards the protection of victims, the implementation of sanctions against aggressors, as well as the social message that we must convey to tackle this global problem," she said.

"Violence against women is the other pandemic we must fight," Barrios added.

For her part, Women Minister Anahi Durand noted that all State institutions should be committed to combating this scourge, because only in this way can positive results be achieved.

"This document will allow us to promote the eradication of gender-based violence against women and will also allow us to make more substantial progress towards this task that we have undertaken," Durand remarked.

The signing ceremony featured Women and Vulnerable Populations Minister Anahi Durand, Spanish Ambassador Alejandro Alvargonzalez, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Stefan Herzberg, European Union Ambassador Gaspar Frontini, and Peruvian Agency for International Cooperation (APCI) Executive Director Jose Antonio Gonzalez.
