According to a brief message on social media, Peru's national soccer team officially welcomed Uruguayan Jorge Fossati as its new coach, on the road to the 2026 World Cup.

"Welcome, coach!" reads a message on X (formerly known as Twitter) posted on Wednesday.

It was joined by the phrase: "Jorge Fossati will lead the Bicolor (bi-colored team's) path to the 2026 World Cup."

The message also highlights the experience and dedication that characterize the work of the Uruguay-born soccer expert.

He led Universitario de Deportes, which became champion of the Peruvian professional soccer's League 1 in 2023.

Fossati's entry to the red-white team had been announced a few weeks ago. Fans were just waiting for the official confirmation.

The Reynoso disaster

Fossati replaces Peruvian coach Juan Reynoso, who was criticized and rejected, given Peru's poor results at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers.

After six games played, Peru is at the bottom of the standings, with merely 2 points due to its draws with Paraguay in its debut and with Venezuela, playing at home in Lima.

It lost other 4 games to Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia.

Fossati's challenge will be to rebuild the mystique of the red-white team and fans' faith in the squad.
