Ceremony marks 70 years of diplomatic relations between Peru and Order of Malta

Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Ignacio Higueras, Order of Malta Ambassador Francesco Vinaccia, and Serpost's head, Enrique Prado, led a ceremony marking 70 years of diplomatic relations between Peru and the Sovereign Order of Malta.

At the ceremony, Higueras noted that the presence of the Order of Malta in Peru dates back to the 17th century and has stood out for its support through the promotion of education and humanitarian assistance.

The commemorative activities included a mass, a photographic and documentary exhibition, as well as the presentation of a commemorative logo and postmark designed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Peruvian Post Office (Serpost), and the Embassy of the Order of Malta.

Order of Malta

The Order of Malta is one of the oldest religious orders and a sovereign entity of international law, which provides medical and humanitarian aid in more than 120 countries.

A lay religious order of the Catholic Church since 1113 and a subject of international law, the Sovereign Order of Malta has diplomatic relations with over 100 states and the European Union, and permanent observer status at the United Nations

The Order's main mission is to help victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters, offering medical assistance, caring for refugees, and distributing medicines and basic survival items.

The Order of Malta operates through 11 Priories, 48 national associations, 133 diplomatic missions, 1 worldwide relief agency and 33 national volunteer corps, as well as numerous hospitals, medical centres and specialist foundations. 

It does not pursue any economic or political goal and does not depend on any other state or government.
