Peru is moving towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly electricity generation in the country, using wind and solar sources, the National Center for Strategic Planning (Ceplan) reported.

Ceplan stated that in the specific case of Peru, hydroelectric energy prevails as the most used renewable energy source.

"However, a significant increase is seen in the participation of wind and solar energy in the country's electrical matrix, going from 0.2% in 2012 to 4.7% in 2022," the center said.

"Such progress marks an important milestone towards more sustainable and respectful electricity generation of the environment in the country," it added.

In this regard, the technical sheet "Production of clean energy from natural and alternative sources," from the Ceplan Observatory, highlights the need to continue promoting the transition towards clean and renewable energies, recognizing the transformative potential that this represents for the country in terms of environmental sustainability, economic growth and energy security.

In this regard, Ceplan's National Foresight Observatory published recommendations for the implementation of clean energy generated from renewable natural sources for environmental sustainability and economic growth.

Some of these recommended measures include having a strong regulatory framework; proactive government policies; investment in research, education and public awareness; adequate infrastructure; sustainable financing; and international cooperation.

This transition from natural sources (sunlight, wind, water, and geothermal heat) to clean energy offers many benefits, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving the quality of the air we breathe, as well as job creation, sustainable rural development, and strengthening of energy security.

In addition, it promotes research and technological innovation, which are fundamental for future progress.
