Central Bank: Remittances sent by Peruvians working abroad up 8.9% in 1Q 2022

19:18 | Lima, May. 23.

Remittances sent by Peruvians working abroad amounted to US$927 million in the first quarter of the year, an 8.9% increase compared to the same period in 2021, the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR) reported on Monday.

The BCR explained that the increase in the amount of money sent by Peruvian migrants was explained by the recovery of employment opportunities in the top countries from which these remittances are sent.

Thus, an increase was observed in remittances from the United States, Chile, and Spain, among others.

The issuing entity stated that, between January and March this year, remittances from Peru to abroad totaled US$49 million (mainly to Venezuela).

On the other hand, the Central Reserve Bank highlighted that non-traditional exports totaled US$1.458 billion in March 2022, up 32.9% from the same month in 2021, driven by a 23% rise in volume and an 8% increase in the average price.

Thus, non-traditional exports reached US$4.407 billion in the first quarter of this year, a growth of 25.2% over the same period in 2021.

The BCR noted that the third month of this year saw higher sales of fresh grapes (up 94.4% compared to the same month in 2021), blueberries (135.1%) and frozen fish fillet (89.6%), among other products.
