Cardinal Pedro Barreto has asked the Government of Peru to promote national unity and build an administration that includes all Peruvians and leads to overcoming political confrontations.
"The proposal involves a change of path; a path that leads to national unity, in which he (
President Pedro Castillo) is the President of all Peruvians," the leading dignitary of the Roman Catholic Church said in statements to RPP.
Barreto pointed out that he informed the President about this initiative during a meeting they held at the Government Palace on Wednesday.
The Cardinal revealed that he received an invitation that the Head of State extended to him through Peru Democratico Legislator Guillermo Bermejo.
"I made a proposal that reflects the feeling of our society and the cry of the poorest, who suffer the consequences not only of the economic crisis, but of all this political instability," he stated.
Barreto believes that, given the current situation of political confrontation, "it is not a matter of changing one minister and another, but the gist is that the President can listen to people of very good will who are interested in transforming the country (…)."
During the dialogue, they agreed to hold a meeting at the Executive Branch headquarters on Holy Thursday, with the participation of President Castillo, Cardinal Barreto, and National Agreement Executive-Secretary Max Hernandez.
Today's meeting is intended "to put this proposal for a change of path into practice on the basis of people's unity," the Catholic Church representative commented.
