Australian Ambassador decorated in Peru

Australian Ambassador Nicholas McCaffrey was awarded the Merit of Distinguished Services in the Grade of Grand Cross by Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio before ending diplomatic duties in the hosting country.

Important accords were signed during McCaffrey's tenure, such as the Peru-Australia Free Trade Agreement in February 2018.

A year earlier, the Air Services Agreement and the Work and Holiday Agreement were inked.

It should be noted the Oceania country's official began his diplomatic duties in Lima in September 2014.

Nicholas McCaffrey, 48, is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He has previously served overseas at Australian missions in the Philippines, Argentina, and Spain.

He also served in Honiara with the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands, and as a Ceasefire Monitor in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.

In Canberra, the diplomat has worked in a range of roles, including in the Latin America Branch and as Director of the Department's Crisis Management Section.

McCaffrey holds a Master's Degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade, as well as a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree from Monash University. He speaks Spanish and is married with three children.

In October 2018, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade appointed Diana Nelson as the next Ambassador to the Inca nation.
