Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Eduardo Martinetti said the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum in Peru seeks to build a consensus for high quality growth by improving human capital.

“Just as I said in the Philippines, the key focus of APEC 2016 Forum will be on how to ensure high quality growth for its member states. This leads us to pursue new opportunities and alternatives to achieve development and prosperity,” he indicated.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of APEC Symposium and Informal Senior Officials’ Meeting (ISOM), Martinetti claimed that next year’s forum will explore four main themes.

“This objective is focused on four key aspects, through which regional economic integration is expected to continue,” he pointed out.

Free Trade

The first aspect includes reinforcing the Asia-Pacific free trade area through a process based on the Bogor Goals Assessment and, therefore, seeing more growth strategies.

“Carbon footprint and other commitments assumed by new leaders will be discussed as well,” he said.

Food Security

The second topic under discussion will be focused on Peru’s contribution to global food security through important products such as quinoa, potatoes and fish.

The third issue involves the development of human capital for this century, since this pillar is important for economies in the bloc to thrive in a competitive global market with innovation, talent and skills.

“APEC shall get committed to developing people’s talents and skills, so that they can adapt to employment demands of the region,” he said.

The fourth topic will address small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which is why we are committed to implementing an action plan supporting integration of these companies within the global supply chain.

“We should take initiatives in respect of green SMEs, infrastructure promotion and new technologies,” the government official pointed out.

Martinetti concluded by saying that APEC Peru 2016 will be aimed at empowering women in all their aspects of their life.

“I am confident APEC Peru 2016 will yield good results,” he stated.
