Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Luis Fernando Helguero affirmed that 2.5 million international tourists are expected to visit Peru this year, despite the fact that the country’s image has been severely damaged by the protests in December and January.

This figure would represent a rise of 26% compared to 2022 (2 million international tourists).

In this regard, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) explained that international travelers would generate an income of US$3.337 billion (up 17% from 2022).

Thus, the Peruvian economy would be revitalized, promoting reactivation and generating important direct and indirect jobs.

"In this post-pandemic situation, Mincetur has been implementing actions and interventions within the framework of the National Strategy for the Reactivation of the Tourism Sector 2022-2025, in order to promote the progressive recovery of activities in the sector," Minister Helguero pointed out.

"(…) gearing its efforts to strengthen domestic tourism which, according to Tourism Satellite Account statistics, represents around 60% of tourism GDP," he added.

Security

Tourism security is a vital factor for the development and recovery of tourism, in the face of social conflicts.

For this reason, it is important to articulate efforts in a multisectoral manner and in coordination with the private sector, in order to prevent and mitigate conflicts, so that the country's image and the arrival of international tourists to Peru are not affected.

The head of Mincetur remarked that the tourism sector will return to figures similar to those of 2019 only in 2025.

"4.4 million international tourists are expected by 2025, a figure that is similar to the one in 2019 (4.4 million: pre-pandemic level)," the minister reported.
