The fishing sector recorded a 24.64% growth in February 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, driven by the increase in landings of marine species (28.88%), maintaining a strong expansion pace, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

In January 2025, the fishing sector grew by 23.51% in relation to the same month in 2024, as reported by the INEI in its technical report Current Economic Activity Progress.

In December 2024, the fishing sector saw a 76.76% expansion compared to the same month of the previous year, closing 2024 with a cumulative variation of 24.89%.

According to the institute, February's result was due to the increased capture of species for direct human consumption (15.16%), across its four main uses: Canned production (118.0%), frozen production (22.1%), cured preparation (9.1%), and fresh consumption (0.9%).

Similarly, extraction for indirect human consumption (anchovy for fishmeal and fish oil) increased significantly, rising from 318 tons in February 2024 to 53,214 tons in February 2025, corresponding to landings at the Ports of Mollendo (Arequipa region) and Ilo (Moquegua region).

Inland fishing also increased by 6.15%, driven by higher extraction of species for fresh consumption (6.0%) and frozen products (6.9%).

Other sectors

On the other hand, in February 2025, domestic cement consumption increased by 4.64% compared to the same month in 2024.

This positive performance was attributed to the dynamism of private construction projects and self-construction, resulting in an overall 0.63% rise in the first two months of this year.

Meanwhile, in February 2025, the mining and hydrocarbons sector decreased by 1.36% from the same month in 2024, due to a decline in the metallic mining subsector (-1.23%). It saw lower production volumes for gold (-15.7%), zinc (-2.1%), iron (-5.2%), lead (-3.4%); however, production increased for silver (+9.0%), copper (+5.0%), molybdenum (+1.5%), tin (+0.8%).

The hydrocarbons subsector declined by 2.24% compared to February 2024, due to lower natural gas liquids production (-6.6%) and natural gas extraction (-4.5%). However, crude oil extraction increased by 7.8%.

During the analyzed period, electricity generation decreased by 0.89% relative to February 2024, mainly due to reductions in renewable energy (wind-solar) generation (-10.51%), and thermal power generation (-2.57%); however, hydroelectric power generation increased by 1.00%.

Among the main companies that reduced their production were Chinango, Orygen Peru, Engie, Statkraft Peru, Empresa de Generacion Junin, Gepsa, Orazul Energy Peru, Celepsa, Egemsa, Termochilca, Kallpa Generacion, and San Gaban.

Among the companies that increased their production were Fenix Power, Egasa, Inland, Empresa de Generacion Huallaga, Empresa de Generacion Huanza, and Electroperu.
