The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, took part in the signing of an agreement between the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights that establishes free legal defense for members of neighborhood watch groups who face crime.

Ministers Luis Jimenez (Justice and Human Rights) and Jose Zapata (Interior), who signed the agreement, participated in the ceremony as well.

The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

The Justice sector's head said the measure aims to support those confronting crime in local communities, amid the risk of possible complaints over their actions.

"Today the State responds to this concern with actions. This agreement between Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Interior establishes something fundamental: free legal defense for those who defend their community," Jimenez stated.

He added that the agreement will help strengthen coordination between the government and citizens, foster training in rights and conflict resolution, and bring justice services closer to sectors that need them most.

Recognition

In turn, President Balcazar highlighted the role of neighborhood watch groups, rural patrol units, and urban patrol groups in citizen security.

The top official also thanked them for their participation in the fight against crime.

The top official acknowledged the State's limitations in this area and recognized the support of organized citizens.

"You are helping the State solve tasks that were 100% ours. You are heroes because of that. And that is why there is a rule that allows compensation for that effort that comes from you," he concluded.
