The pride of feeling Cusco citizens came from inland, with a colorful greeting —to the rhythm of music, dance, and allegory from its 12 provinces and over 115 districts— to the City of Cusco for its jubilee month.
Thousands of citizens —led by mayors; councilors; civil organizations; as well as Acomayo, Anta, Calca, Canas, Canchis, Chumbivilcas, Espinar, La Convencion, Paruro, Paucartambo, Quispicanchi, and Urubamba provinces— took to El Sol Avenue on Saturday to enter the southern city's Hawkaypata (Main Square).
The identity of each province was shown by the color of their clothing, song melodies, and above all the choreography of each dance that generated great excitement among attendees —Cusco residents and tourists— who gathered on the perimeters of this large square.
"We, being the cradle where humanity was born, have deeply-rooted expressions, and these have been expressed to their maximum potential here in Cusco; we are happy to welcome visitors," Cusco Region Governor Werner Salcedo, host of numerous delegations, told Andina News Agency.
The regional authority was accompanied by Cusco Mayor Luis Pantoja Calvo; counselors; local, police, and justice administration authorities; among others who were stationed on a large stage set up at the Basilica Cathedral's foot.
There, they received a series of gifts consisting of agricultural, fruit, industrial, and artisanal production that each province had brought in baskets.
The attendees, who accompanied the ceremony with applause and loud messages saying "Haylli Qosqo!" or "Long live Cusco!," also received gifts that were thrown to them.
"It is as if planet Earth united all its forces to be able, from the navel of the world, to express its energy jointly with our Tayta Inti (sun), which I hope can radiate all that strength and energy to the more than 33 million Peruvians, and with this we (can) renew our commitment, our hope of being able to guarantee development for our region," he mentioned.
The governor believes that the people of Cusco live their festivals to the fullest these days, offer culture and identity, as well as witness this tourist and economic reactivation that was affected by the pandemic and the social-political situation.
"Our economy grows, it becomes more dynamic; with this, we will have a Cusco that truly guarantees its path in the joy of its people," Salcedo expressed.
"Cusco expresses itself through its high Andean zone, its valleys, and its Amazonia. Cusco is that expression where we can tell not only Peru but the world that we are rich in identity and culture, also in production, mining, and gas; with that joy that we bring to Peru, we celebrate our jubilee month this June," the dignitary concluded.
The celebrations in honor of this city continued on Sunday. The Inti Raymi staging event is scheduled for today.
