More than 45,000 tourists —domestic and foreign ones— on Monday enjoyed the impressive staging of
Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) celebrated in the City of Cusco, which observed the central day of its
jubilee month.
Since early in the morning, thousands of people —including residents and tourists— gathered near the three stages where the Inti Raymi took place.
At around 09:00 a.m. the show began on the
Qoricancha Temple esplanade, located in front of El Sol Avenue —one of the main roads in the southern metropolis.
A beautiful sunny morning preceded the Inca's entrance to lead the ceremony aimed at saluting the Inti (Sun God), which was celebrated by attendees.
It was reported that around 30,000 people filled El Sol Avenue to appreciate the beginning of the ceremony in Cusco.
The Imperial City looked crowded throughout its historic center, with a large presence of foreign tourists.
Cusco receives about 50 flights per day. According to information from tourism authorities, the airplanes arrived full of passengers and airlines offered up to eight flights a day given the strong demand.
While this ceremony was taking place, thousands of people (around 20,000) gathered at the Main Square to appreciate the second Inti Raymi act, which was attended by Cusco's mayor and other authorities.
The start of the third and main act of this staging took place at Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Park in the afternoon.
The 4,200 seats to watch the show were completely sold out several weeks in advance, confirming the great interest in enjoying the Inti Raymi festival.
