The National Elections Board (JNE) on Sunday evening ordered an extension of voting hours from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 13, in polling places where citizens were unable to cast their ballots today.

Under this measure, voting may take place tomorrow at the 15 polling places that were not installed today in the capital, as well as in two cities in the United States.

JNE Chairman Roberto Burneo stated that the decision was adopted "in view of the deficiencies that arose in the distribution of materials under the responsibility of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), and in order to ensure that no citizen is prevented from exercising the right to vote and to political participation."

Accordingly, the electoral authority extended the deadline for the installation of polling tables until April 13, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., depending on local time zones, taking into account the tables that must be set up abroad.

Likewise, it extended voting hours until 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 13, based on the respective time zones.

The JNE requested that the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) provide the necessary support so that, through the Ministry of Education, educational institutions remain available for ONPE to install polling tables.

The measures apply to polling tables where electoral materials did not arrive in Metropolitan Lima, as well as in Orlando (Florida) and Paterson (New Jersey), the United States.

As reported by ONPE, polling tables could not be installed today in 15 polling places across several districts of the capital—three in San Juan de Miraflores, seven in Lurín, and five in Pachacamac—leaving a total of 63,300 voters unable to cast their ballots.

Other measures

The JNE agreed to provide logistical and security support through the Policía Nacional del Perú (National Police of Peru) and the Fuerzas Armadas del Perú (Armed Forces of Peru) to ensure the safe deployment and return of electoral materials, as well as the movement of citizens.

Furthermore, it ordered that, through the Ministry of Labor, provisions be issued to grant the necessary support to workers who must vote on Monday, April 13.

In addition, it was agreed that vote counting at computing centers and on the ONPE institutional website must not be affected.

The electoral authority stated that the ban on electoral propaganda remains in force until Monday in the areas and time slots where polling tables were not installed in Metropolitan Lima.

The body urged that no opinion polls, quick counts, or similar results be disseminated.

Moreover, the JNE specified that the Special Electoral Boards (JEE) must not declare nullity in the affected polling tables.

It added that ONPE must "implement this resolution in full, under responsibility."

"This decision by the JNE plenary is taken within the constitutional and legal framework, guaranteeing the integrity of the electoral process and its legality, as the electoral system’s governing body, without prejudice to the responsibilities that correspond to the authorities regarding these events," Burneo stated.

He also called on authorities to comply with the decision, as well as on citizens to remain calm and trust the electoral authority.
