Peru's PM: Increase in rewards is further proof of commitment to fight against crime

Prime Minister Eduardo Arana on Wednesday stated that the increase in rewards for the capture of criminal gangs' ringleaders, such as Erick Moreno "El Monstruo" (The Monster), is further proof of the government's commitment to the fight against crime.

This message was delivered during the press conference held following the Council of Ministers' session.

"As we announced in Congress, the reward program for the capture of the 'Monstruo,' a member of 'Los Injertos del Cono Norte' (The Grafts of the Northern Cone) has already been updated. Part of this effort is now taking shape, and this is further proof of the government's commitment to the fight against crime," he stated.

Earlier today, the Ministry of Interior increased the reward from S/500,000 (US$140,017) to S/1 million (US$280,034) for information leading to the location and capture of Erick Moreno Hernandez, also known as "El Monstruo." The suspect is accused of being the main perpetrator of several kidnappings.

It is worth noting that on Tuesday, the Executive Branch decided to raise the maximum limit of rewards to be granted in cases involving individuals with the highest profiles within a criminal organization.

Through a decree published in the Legal Norms section of the Official Gazette El Peruano, amendments were made to the regulations of Legislative Decree 1180, which establishes the granting of rewards.

At another point, the Prime Minister highlighted the work being carried out by the Comando Unificado de Pataz (Unified Command of Pataz) in La Libertad region, under the leadership of the Armed Forces and the Peruvian National Police, with the involvement of all sectors of the State.

"There is strict control, the results are remarkable, and through the office of the High Commissioner (against illegal mining), heavy blows are being dealt to illegal mining in other parts of the country," he stated.

On the other hand, the Cabinet chief reiterated his concern over the situation unfolding within the Public Ministry, where he said there are serious controversies and accusations.

"From the Executive Branch, we believe that respect for the law must prevail, and we urge that this matter be resolved swiftly and within the framework of the law," he added.
