Similarly, the Head of State underscored that Peru has led significant international efforts to combat plastic pollution.
She mentioned that our country, alongside Rwanda, presented a resolution aimed at creating a legally binding international instrument on this matter during the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly.
“This crucial step started the negotiations to create the global treaty, establishing the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC), responsible for drafting the instrument, including its application in marine environments," she indicated.
The President stated that, at the fifth INC session held at the end of 2024 in Busan (South Korea), Peru and over a hundred countries maintained a strong commitment to reaching a legally-binding agreement, with implementation and monitoring mechanisms covering plastics’ entire life cycle.
The top official mentioned that, on that occasion, no consensus was reached, as the document did not meet the expectations of all participants. Thus, Mrs. Boluarte called for efforts toward achieving this goal.
"The success of this treaty does not lie solely in the agreements signed, but in our collective will to turn them into reality," she said.
Additionally, it served as a platform for the launch of a new Global Forum on Energy Transition, an initiative by the European Union.
