on Wednesday stated that the majority of Peruvians support the application of the death penalty for hitmen, extortionists, and rapists, which encourages her government to propose a serious and responsible debate to prevent more Peruvians from dying at the hands of those criminals.
Mrs. Boluarte participated in the ceremony at which the addendum to the government-to-government contract with the United Kingdom was signed for the improvement of Guillermo Diaz de la Vega Hospital in Apurimac region.
At this event, the top official revealed that a majority of Peruvians expressed support for the implementation of the death penalty in the 18 regional hearings convened on this issue by the Justice Ministry.
"We are seriously considering it because we cannot allow those organized gangs, those extortionists, hitmen who obtain money at the cost of the lives of entrepreneurial and innocent Peruvians, to take their lives," Mrs. Boluarte stated.
"Just as they easily take the lives of defenseless people, we are seriously considering also taking their lives through the death penalty as well. We will not allow them to walk freely in the streets and continue murdering Peruvians anymore," she pointed out.
Following a proposal by the top official, the Ministry of Justice established a sectoral commission on December 15, 2024, to lead a debate on the death penalty.
Since then, the commission has held 18 decentralized assemblies to debate this issue, which will culminate in the presentation of a technical report compiling the proposals gathered from these meetings with authorities, universities, and civil society representatives.
On this matter, the Head of State on Tuesday said that debating and approving the application of this penalty was an act of historical responsibility toward the country, urging the political class to engage in a serious discussion.
Today's ceremony was held at the Government Palace in the Peruvian capital, Lima.
