The Ministry of Production (Produce) reported that domestic retail trade sales experienced significant growth of 5.3% in April 2025, compared to the same month last year, reaching S/4.059 billion (US$1.082 billion) in revenues.

"There have been two consecutive months of positive results in domestic trade. This performance was driven by domestic demand (2.5%) and the seasonal effect of the Easter holiday, which boosted tourism and activities related to the celebration," Production Minister Sergio Gonzalez highlighted.

When analyzing the different categories, the supermarket and hypermarket subsector recorded a 2.2% increase in sales, due to higher demand for beverages and tobacco (4.8%) and miscellaneous products (45.1%).

Department stores increased its sales by 13.6%, driven by higher demand for clothing and footwear (15.1%), furniture (17.9%), and household items (11.3%).

Meanwhile, hardware and finishing stores saw a 7% growth in sales, mainly due to growth in the furniture (32.4%), household items (30.2%), and miscellaneous product (5.7%) categories.

Similarly, the home equipment category posted a 4.3% rise in sales. At the product line level, the growth was mainly driven by higher sales of household items (4.7%).

In contrast, this result was partially offset by a decline in sales of furniture (-8.4%) and miscellaneous products (-1%).

Finally, the pharmacy and drugstore sector grew 4.5% in sales, boosted by higher demand for pharmaceutical and medicinal products (3.8%) and personal care items (7%).

Meanwhile, the books, newspapers, and stationery category saw an 8.7% increase, attributed to a rise in bookstore product sales (21.8%).
