The Government of Peru expressed its protest over the successive acts of provocation by Colombian citizens in the Santa Rosa community, located on Chineria Island, which belongs to our country.
It was later reported that the act was carried out by Daniel Quintero, a presidential pre-candidate from said country.
This was compounded by the detention of two Colombian citizens, who were reportedly conducting topographic studies in the southern part of Chineria Island.
Regarding this, it was indicated that the Public Ministry (Prosecutor's Office) has already initiated a preliminary investigation into the two foreigners for the crime against national sovereignty.
The Public Ministry has also ordered a series of proceedings, all within the scope of its authority.
"The Government of Peru protests the succession of acts of provocation carried out by Colombian citizens in the town of Santa Rosa, located on Chineria Island, which is the capital of the Santa Rosa de Loreto district," the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a communiqué on Wednesday evening.
"These acts harm the Peruvian-Colombian bilateral relationship, particularly the harmony and well-being of our border communities," the document noted.
Likewise, it urged the Colombian government to provide the necessary cooperation so that "such actions are immediately stopped, as they do not contribute to the historically harmonious relationship between the border communities of Peru and Colombia."
In this regard, it reiterated that this island, located in Loreto region, is Peruvian territory, in accordance with the 1922 Boundary and River Navigation Treaty, the records of the Joint Demarcation Commission of 1928–1930, and the 1934 Rio de Janeiro Protocol of Friendship and Cooperation.
"Peru will remain vigilant and ensure respect for its territorial integrity, always acting in accordance with international law," the communiqué concluded.
