Peru: Strong winds damage homes and roads in Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua, Tacna and Lima

00:01 | Lima, Aug. 1.

Local authorities are assessing the damage caused by strong winds that hit several districts in the regions of Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua, Tacna, and Lima this afternoon, affecting homes and roads, according to the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) through the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN).

Monitoring and tracking of the meteorological phenomenon continue in coordination with the
National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi).

According to the technical-scientific agency, this phenomenon is caused by subsidence in the upper levels of the atmosphere, which generates strong downward winds over the desert surface, lifting dust and sand.

In addition, the presence of perpendicular winds contributes to the horizontal transport of these particles, reducing visibility across wide areas of the central and southern coast—especially in Ica region, where wind speeds reached up to 50 km/h.

Based on the latest information and satellite monitoring images from Senamhi, the phenomenon is confirmed to be moving toward the northern part of Peru. Likewise, it is expected to continue over the coming hours.

Indeci stated that Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (EDAN) efforts are being carried out by local governments.

It is worth noting that, through Weather Advisory No. 261, Senamhi has forecast additional moderate to strong winds along the coast until August 3.

Given this situation, Indeci advises citizens to remain calm, cover their nose and mouth to prevent respiratory issues, and wear protective eyewear to safeguard their vision.

Other recommendations include securing rooftops, reinforcing window panes, and staying away from electrical equipment, trees, and structures that could collapse due to the wind.
