Peru aims to strengthen agro-export offering in Japan

00:01 | Tokyo (Japan), Aug. 8.

Peru seeks to strengthen its agro-export offering in the Japanese market by facilitating the entry of various products through agricultural cooperation between both countries, especially in sustainable production, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).

In this regard, as part of the activities scheduled during the official visit to Japan, Agrarian Development and Irrigation Minister Angel Manero participated in the 16th Meeting of the Peruvian-Japanese Business Council (CEPEJA) and "Invest Day Peru."

This event allowed for continued promotion of various opportunities in the South American country, especially the agricultural sector's great export potential.

During the day, the Midagri head met with the Vice-Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF), Kenichi Soji, to discuss important topics such as market access and a technical cooperation agenda aimed at improving the competitiveness and sustainable development of Peru's agricultural sector.

Similarly, the Peruvian Minister met with Keiichiro Nakazawa, Managing Executive Officer of the Nippon Koei company —the Japanese counterpart in the G2G process— to coordinate the next steps of the technical cooperation that will make Majes-Siguas I and III possible, an important megaproject located in Peru's southern Arequipa region.

Recently, the Peruvian Government, through Supreme Decree No. 013-2025-Midagri, authorized the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation to sign the State-to-State agreement for contracting technical assistance services for the commissioning works of Majes-Siguas Project's first stage.

On Thursday, the Government demonstrated its commitment to attracting investments, boosting foreign trade, and creating greater opportunities for the well-being of all Peruvians, convinced that increased foreign investment will help raise foreign exchange earnings, generate more jobs, and consequently improve the population's quality of life.

Export potential

In 2024, Japan ranked as Peru's third-largest trading partner in Asia, accounting for 4.5% of our exports and 2% of total imports.

This relationship is strengthened by a Free Trade Agreement in effect since 2012 and sustained Japanese investment in key sectors such as irrigation megaprojects, transportation, technology, among others.

Peruvian exports to Japan have experienced steady growth since 2021, especially in non-traditional products.

The Asian country shows growing interest in Peruvian superfoods, such as quinoa.

In 2024, the value of Peruvian exports to Japan reached a record close to US$129 million, led by green coffee beans, avocados, and fresh grapes.

Additionally, the textile segment stood out, with alpaca garment shipments totaling US$1.3 million, exported by 27 national companies.
