Peru currently has 10 operational wind power plants, which together have an installed capacity of 1,015 megawatts (MW). Thanks to this, clean and sustainable energy is being produced, the
These plants contribute 3,427 gigawatt-hours (GWh) to the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN), increasing the share of renewable energy in the national energy matrix, strengthening energy security, and ensuring a high-quality electricity supply for the entire population.
Wind energy is obtained through wind turbines that convert the wind's kinetic energy into mechanical energy, which is then transformed into electricity by a generator. It is a renewable, clean, and efficient energy source.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) highlighted the following as the main wind power plants:
Punta Lomitas Wind Power Plant (Ica region): 294 MW
Wayra Extension Wind Power Plant (Ica region): 177 MW
San Juan Wind Farm (Ica region): 136 MW
Tres Hermanas Wind Farm (Ica region): 97 MW
Cupisnique Wind Power Plant (La Libertad region): 80 MW
According to official technical studies, Peru's wind energy potential reaches 20 GW, of which currently only about 5% is being utilized, creating significant opportunities for new clean energy projects.
Minem emphasized that power plants using renewable resources not only strengthen Peru's energy security but also foster employment in various regions, stimulate the local economy, and contribute to closing gaps in energy access.
