on Tuesday emphatically stated that Peru "has not touched a single millimeter" of Colombian territory, following a statement in that regard made by that country's President, Gustavo Petro.
The Peruvian government official suggested that Colombia's top official "has probably not been adequately informed."
Similarly, the diplomat recalled that, through the Salomon-Lozano Treaty (1922) and subsequent delimitation agreements, the Island of Chineria was assigned to Peru. At one point, the Island of Santa Rosa split off from it, only to later rejoin.
"Peru lawfully created, this past July 3, through the issuance of the corresponding supreme decree, the Municipality of Santa Rosa de Loreto on Peruvian territory. Not a single millimeter of Colombian territory has been touched. Leticia is, of course, Colombian, but not Santa Rosa; Santa Rosa is Peruvian," Schialer told RPP Noticias.
Nonetheless, the Peruvian high-ranking official stressed President Petro's statement that Colombia will proceed to use diplomatic channels to address the matter.
Likewise, the minister stated that his office is already engaged in that task, which is why they have issued a statement reaffirming —he said— the enduring commitment to dialogue and integration between both countries' Foreign Affairs Ministries.
Furthermore, Schialer said it is false that Peru has any intention —or has ever had the intention— of undermining Leticia in any way, as claimed by the Colombian President, who asserted that there is an attempt to "make the locality disappear."
Regarding President Dina Boluarte's reaction, the Foreign Affairs Minister stated that the Head of State laments these remarks and was also surprised by them, given that Peru is making efforts to elevate relations with Colombia to the highest diplomatic level.
Nevertheless, Schialer ruled out the possibility that this event could jeopardize relations between the two countries.
"By no means. This is something for which, first of all, we have the mechanisms — that is very important. Second, on Peru's part, we are fully willing, starting with the President of the Republic herself, to resolve this through the existing mechanisms, which are diplomatic channels," he emphasized.
