The Peruvian Government expressed concern over the placement of a Colombian flag on Chineria Island, located in Santa Rosa de Loreto district, which belongs to Peru.

Through an official statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was emphasized that such acts "do not contribute to the historic harmonious and peaceful coexistence between the Peruvian and Colombian communities and authorities in the area."

"On this date, the Government of Peru took note, with concern, of the placement of a Colombian flag on Chineria Island —in the district of Santa Rosa de Loreto— which constitutes Peruvian sovereign territory," the document issued on Monday stated.

Likewise, the Government led by President Dina Boluarte emphasized that such actions are unnecessary and divert the cooperation efforts that Peru and Colombia must prioritize in order to jointly address the urgent challenges that negatively affect both countries' border populations.

On Monday morning, media outlets reported the presence of a Colombian flag in the Santa Rosa de Loreto district, Mariscal Ramon Castilla province (Loreto region), which was later removed.

As is known, during an Address to the Nation, President Boluarte stated that Peru's sovereignty is not in dispute and that there is no pending matter to address with Colombia, following recent remarks by that country's President, Gustavo Petro.

Similarly, in a recent interview, Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer stated that Peru's position on the national sovereignty of Chineria Island is clear.

He also noted that treaties, international law, history, and documentary evidence support the defense of that jurisdiction as Peruvian territory.
