Peru has extended its heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Iraq, as well as to the families of the victims of the tragic fire that occurred recently at a shopping center in the city of Kut, leaving more than 60 people dead.

"At this difficult time, Peru extends its best wishes for the speedy recovery of those who were injured," reads a message posted on the Foreign Affairs Ministry's social media accounts.

More than 60 people have died in Iraq in a fire that swept through a shopping center in the city of Kut, authorities reported on Thursday, as many families continue searching for their loved ones.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident in a country where safety regulations are lax.

"The tragic fire claimed the lives of 61 innocent people, most of whom died of asphyxiation in the bathrooms," the Iraqi Interior Ministry reported, updating a previous death toll of 50.
