adding that it will ensure these are respected in accordance with what was agreed with the neighboring country of Colombia.
"We are aware of our rights and will ensure they are respected as they should be, because these are rights agreed upon with the other country. There has been no imposition or anything of the sort here; rather, this is in line with what was agreed with our neighboring and sister country, Colombia," Denegri indicated.
In that regard, the diplomat stated that Peru remains steadfast in defending its rights and seeks to ensure that relations among Latin American countries are of the highest level and marked by brotherhood, bearing in mind the need for greater unity and less division.
"Division will only serve to give organized crime free rein to operate and prevent us from addressing climate change or creating better conditions to do so," he remarked during the press conference following a new session of the Council of Ministers.
Similarly, Denegri stated that Peru is fully willing to cooperate in helping to address the problem faced by Leticia, in Colombia, due to the drop in the flow of the Amazon River branch that reaches that city, which is hindering navigation.
The ambassador reiterated that there is no doubt about Peruvian sovereignty in the district of Santa Rosa de Loreto.
He added that Peru's relations with its neighbors are based on mutual respect, international law, and the treaties signed.
"We have the rights and sovereignty over Santa Rosa in accordance with the 1922 Boundary and River Navigation Treaty, as well as the 1934 Protocol of Friendship and Cooperation," he stated.
The diplomat said that 1922 Treaty established the boundaries between Peru and Colombia, assigning Chineria Island to Peru.
The district of Santa Rosa de Loreto is an integral part of Chineria Island.
He also reported that Colombian delegates from the Permanent Joint Border Inspection Commission will arrive for its fourteenth session in September. He clarified that this is not a boundary-setting commission.
"We decided to bring that meeting forward and invite the delegates here to assess the situation. This commission's purpose is the replacement, maintenance, and densification of the boundary markers, as well as the georeferencing of the limit established by the boundary-setting commission," Denegri explained.
He added that river erosion and sedimentation hindering navigation are also being addressed.
Regarding Peru's note of protest to Colombia over the incursion of a Colombian military aircraft into national territory, Denegri said this is because the explanations provided by that country were not sufficient.
"We are going to submit a note of protest demanding that they provide us with the necessary clarifications and assurances for this incursion, which should never have happened —least of all at a time like the current one," he stated.
