The Chancay Megaport —one of the most important projects for Peru's maritime and export sectors— has had a significant and positive impact on Peruvian families' quality of life.

Gonzalo Rios, Deputy General Manager of Cosco Shipping Ports Chancay Peru, revealed that infrastructure construction generated 1,500 jobs.

Likewise, he noted that the port currently employs 703 people, 53% of whom are from Chancay and 20% of whom are women.

"The Peruvian private port for public use aims to achieve efficient port-city integration in order to optimize operations and minimize impacts and risks," Rios Polastri said during the international conference “Sustainability and Integral Ecology in Business and Law,” held at the Lima campus of the University of Piura (UDEP).

Rios stated that the project plays a key role in serving the Asian market and creates opportunities for millions of Peruvians by generating new value and distribution chains in global trade.

Furthermore, he highlighted sustainability initiatives such as pre-investment studies for the Instituto Superior Tecnologico de Chancay (Chancay Higher Technological Institute), the health center, and the city's liquid waste treatment center.

"These are examples that accompanied the actions of the (Peruvian) State and helped generate resources for change and development in Chancay," he said.

He also outlined challenges such as maintaining the monitoring of flora and fauna, optimizing coastal remediation slopes, engaging in dialogue with authorities, and monitoring investments.

A significant change

In a recent interview with Xinhua news agency, Rios stressed that the launch of the Chancay Port represents a transformational change for thousands of Peruvians, especially for local residents, who now have access to new opportunities in trade, exports, as well as personal and professional development.

Young people from the area have been able to redirect their life plans due to the job opportunities created, especially in port-related tasks such as crane operation, cargo handling, and logistical support, he explained.

He explained that these jobs have been made possible thanks to a prior training strategy, as free courses on port operations were offered during the construction phase to familiarize participants with that environment.

This later enabled many of them to apply with an advantage thanks to the knowledge they had acquired.

Regional hub

Cosco Shipping Ports highlighted that the Chancay Port will be a key maritime point for trade between South America and Asia, mainly China (Port of Shanghai), as it will become a regional hub for redistributing cargo from Peru, Chile, Ecuador, and Colombia.

It was reported that the construction of the  port generated 1,300 direct jobs and around 8,000 indirect jobs due to the economic activity in the area.

The design and construction project for the Port of Chancay had been underway since April 2011.

In this regard, the tax authority stated that it continues to streamline these processes, highlighting in particular the efficiency of customs clearance and the use of the terminal as a temporary storage facility.
