, through a statement, called on the Executive Branch to address the institution's budget request, which amounts to S/81 million (US$22.81 million).
In a video message released on Thursday night, the prosecutors stated that they are facing a severe budget crisis and require said amount in order not to affect the work of all prosecutorial subsystems and supporting areas.
In that regard, the prosecutorial body officials specified that they have submitted eight requests to the Executive Branch to obtain this budget. However, these were denied.
The Public Ministry representatives highlighted that the institution has proven efficiency in spending, having achieved a 97% budget execution rate in 2024. They noted that to date they have reached an execution level of over 60%.
The prosecutors pointed out that, while their success is the outcome of joint efforts with other institutions, "prosecutors cannot be expected to work without the minimum conditions."
"We call for the budget request of the Public Ministry to be addressed in order to guarantee justice for all people. Justice is not an expense; it is an indispensable investment to strengthen our democracy," the coordinating prosecutors and representatives of the specialized prosecutor's offices stated.
Likewise, the Public Ministry representatives specified which actions currently being carried out would be affected if the requested amount is not granted.
The prosecutors indicated that key operations against organized crime and extortion could be halted, as well as human trafficking cases and the rescue of victims of those crimes.
They also stated that actions against illegal mining, citizen insecurity, and progress in femicide cases could be affected.
Moreover, it was noted that investigations into human rights cases, such as those related to enforced disappearances or the 2022-2023 protests, among others, would be at risk.
In Peru, the Public Ministry is independent from the Executive Branch.
