Peru's 2026 Elections: Deadline to register electoral alliances will expire on Aug 2

10:15 | Lima, Jul. 14.

The deadline to register electoral alliances with the National Office for the Registry of Political Organizations of the National Elections Board (JNE) will expire on August 2, in accordance with the electoral schedule approved by Peru's highest electoral authority.

The 43 political organizations authorized to participate in the 2026 electoral process may form alliances under a single name and common symbol, the JNE specified.

The new electoral alliance must apply for registration with the Registry of Political Organizations by August 2.

The National Office for the Registry of Political Organizations will announce on September 1 which electoral alliances have met the requirements for registration, in accordance with the internal regulations of the respective political organizations.

The deadline to make amendments to their statutes and regulations expired on June 11.

According to the JNE, nearly half of the 43 political parties requested updates to their statutes.

What are the requirements to form electoral alliances?

According to the Political Organizations Law, an electoral alliance must be made up of two or more political organizations holding valid registration.

To apply for registration, they must submit a record of the agreement for the formation of the electoral alliance, signed by their party authorities; indicate the electoral process in which they will participate; state the alliance objectives; provide the name and symbol that will represent them; and detail their governing bodies.

They must also appoint their representatives, legal agents, and treasurers; indicate how candidacies and any direct public funding allocated to the alliance will be distributed; and specify the method they will use to select their candidates, among other requirements.

Electoral threshold

Article 13 of the Political Organizations Law establishes that political organizations running in elections as part of an alliance must obtain 6% of the valid votes in order to maintain their electoral registration.

Additionally, this threshold will increase by 1% for each additional party that joins the alliance.

The General Elections will be held on April 12, 2026, with a potential runoff for the presidential race scheduled for June 7 of the same year.
