Peru was elected as a member of the UN Tourism Executive Council for the 2025–2027 term, representing the Americas region.

The decision was made during the 70th Meeting of the UN Tourism Regional Commission for the Americas (CAM) —the highest tourism governance forum in the region— held in Lima with the participation of delegations from over 20 countries.

Three seats were filled during this session, with Peru, Argentina, and Brazil elected as the representatives of the Americas region on the Executive Council —the main governing body of UN Tourism.

Similarly, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, and Paraguay will take over for the 2027–2029 term.

Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Desilu Leon thanked the delegations for their support and underscored her commitment to strengthening tourism in the Americas.

"Peru renews its commitment to the Americas region and seeks to embrace the interests and initiatives that each of you wishes to foster within the framework of UN Tourism," Minister Leon stated.

"We will work toward a resilient and dynamic tourism sector that includes the entire value chain, so that no one is left behind," she added.

As an Executive Council member, Peru will take on a strategic role in shaping international policies that effectively address the current challenges facing the tourism sector.

It is worth noting that, alongside Peru, the Dominican Republic was also elected to join the Executive Council as a representative of the region.

The 70th CAM was attended by UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, Executive Director Natalia Bayona, State ministers, deputy ministers, and delegations from over 20 countries.

During the event, representatives were also appointed to subsidiary bodies such as the Technical Committee of the International Code for the Protection of Tourists and the Online Tourism Education Committee, and a host country was recommended for the celebration of World Tourism Day 2026.

Moreover, it was confirmed that the next CAM meeting will be held in Paraguay in 2026, while the 2027 edition will take place in Argentina.

During the 70th CAM Meeting's opening ceremony, Minister Leon conveyed the greetings of President Dina Boluarte, who had put forward Peru's candidacy to host this important gathering, reaffirming the government's strong commitment to UN Tourism's principles and objectives.

The head of Mincetur highlighted the Peruvian leadership in implementing initiatives aligned with UN Tourism.

Likewise, she reaffirmed the country's commitment to multilateral cooperation and to tourism as a driver of development.

Thus, the minister emphasized that Peru is proud to be the first nation in the world to adopt a customized version of UN Tourism's STAR tool for tourism development in rural destinations.

She also welcomed the recent inauguration of the UN Tourism Regional Office for the Americas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It is important to mention that the 70th CAM Meeting was preceded by the International Seminar “Artificial Intelligence and Tourism in the Americas,” which provided a valuable platform for reflection on the impact of AI in transforming the sector.

Therefore, by successfully hosting this high-level event, Peru strengthens its position as an attractive destination for international meetings, reinforcing its standing in the MICE segment (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions).
