Former President Martín Vizcarra will serve a five-month preventive detention ordered by the Judiciary at Lima-based Barbadillo Penitentiary Establishment, the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) announced on Thursday.

"The defendant Martin Vizcarra Cornejo has been assigned to the Barbadillo Penitentiary Establishment. INPE guarantees the respect of his fundamental rights and the strict enforcement of the penitentiary regime in accordance with the law," it stated via social media.

Following the court's decision, Vizcarra, who was present in the courtroom, was taken into custody by police agents and temporarily held in the Judiciary's holding cell in La Victoria district, where he spent the night.

The Transfer

Vizcarra was transported to Barbadillo Prison, located within the Peruvian National Police's Special Operations Directorate (Diroes) in Lima's Ate district.

Former Presidents Alejandro Toledo (2001–2006), Ollanta Humala (2011–2016), and Pedro Castillo (2021–2022) are also held at this penitentiary.

Vizcarra is being prosecuted in the Lomas de Ilo–Moquegua Hospital case.

The Public Ministry accuses him of having received S/2.3 million (US$611,000) in alleged bribes. It has requested a 15-year prison sentence against him.

As is known, Vizcarra was President of the Republic from March 23, 2018, to November 9, 2020, the day on which he was impeached and removed from office by Congress.
