Peru strengthens global blueberry leadership through phytosanitary strategies

With the start of a new blueberry season, Peru not only celebrates its leadership in the international market but also prepares to tackle the phytosanitary challenges that come with this key agricultural period.

According to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), Peru exported approximately 326,000 tons of blueberries in 2024, valued at US$2.27 billion, solidifying its position as the world's leading exporter of the fruit.

Domestically, this production chain holds significant weight for Peru.

Midagri reports that blueberries accounted for 9.7% of the country's total agricultural exports in the first two months of 2025, not only strengthening the trade balance but also positively impacting rural employment and agricultural GDP growth.

"Blueberry cultivation in Peru has experienced very rapid growth, accompanied by specialization in the practices required to deliver the produce to its destination," BASF Latin America Pacific Representative, Claudio Sepulveda, said.

"Efficient water use, soil management, and the rational application of products, among other measures, have been key to achieving the sustainability of Peruvian agriculture," he added.

Within this framework, a comprehensive approach to phytosanitary management is key to maintaining Peru's competitiveness in this industry.

From the rational use of products and rotation of active ingredients to the implementation of good agricultural practices, each stage directly influences the fruit's quality and its acceptance in key markets, especially the United States, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom.

The start of the new blueberry season brings challenges that will require a timely and technical response from producers.

Maintaining efficient and sustainable phytosanitary management will be crucial to preserving fruit quality and reinforcing Peru's position as a global leader, ensuring the growth of a production chain key to the country's agricultural and economic development.
