Yesterday, Vizcarra received a visit from his defense lawyer, who reiterated that he will appeal the ruling ordering preventive detention, arguing that his client has strong family and professional ties.
The former top official is under investigation for the alleged crime of passive bribery, related to the purported receipt of bribes in exchange for awarding contracts for the Lomas de Ilo and Moquegua Hospital projects while he served as governor of the southern region (2011–2014).
He is facing an oral trial in this case.
The Prosecutor's Office alleges that he received bribes related to the bidding for these projects. Thus, it has requested a 15-year prison sentence.
As is known, Vizcarra was President of the Republic from March 23, 2018, to November 9, 2020, the day on which he was impeached and removed from office by Congress.
